Record Redesign
Throughout this project, I explored the redesign of the iconic hip-hop album Illmatic by Nas, experimenting with two different visual styles: hip-hop and jazz.
The aim of this project was to reimagine the album cover for Illmatic by Nas, creating two separate designs inspired by the contrasting genres of hip-hop and jazz.
My creative process began with researching existing album covers and experimenting with typography, illustration and composition. For my hip-hop design, I focused on hand-drawn lettering, bold illustrations and distressed textures to reflect the raw energy of the album. My second design took inspiration from vintage jazz covers, using a softer colour palette, retro textures and piano-inspired typography.
Throughout both designs, I refined the layouts, typography and visual hierarchy to create cohesive front and back covers, exploring how different design approaches can change the overall identity of an album.
